Predictable Color Mixing with Natural Dyes
Catharine Ellis

Catharine Ellis, author of Woven Shibori and The Art and Science of Natural Dyes, will be talking about her personal and explorative approach to mixing dye colors, discussing how she chooses, applies and mixes them, using few dyes for many colors. She will also talk about her development of the woven shibori technique and her use of natural dyes with her woven shibori textiles.

Catharine Ellis has been making textiles on the loom for 50 years. Her personal work combines both weaving and dyeing. After teaching the Professional Crafts Fiber Program at Haywood Community College for many years, Catharine turned her focus to natural dyeing, and developing processes by which natural dyes can be used efficiently and effectively both in her own textiles and in teaching of others.

Catharine is the author of Woven Shibori, (Interweave Press, 2005, 2015) and The Art and Science of Natural Dyes (Schiffer Press, 2019) with co-author Joy Boutrup. Her work has been exhibited in venues worldwide and she has taught internationally. Catharine’s current “Garden Series” utilizes plant dyes harvested from her garden. She continues her work and research in weaving, dyeing, and gardening at her North Carolina studio. ellistextiles.com.
